7 keys so that my employees can reinforce conciliation in a better way

One of the HR trends for this year is the biggest concern that companies show for the psychological well-being of your employees. Among the many ways to achieve this, improving work-life balance is positioned as one of the most efficient ways to achieve greater employee satisfaction and greater loyalty to the company.

There are still many companies that believe that they can do nothing to streamline the way they work so that their employees can better manage their time, and divide it in a balanced way between their work obligations and their personal lives. However, today we are going to verify that they can do much more than they think, the key is to have willingness to carry out this change and really understand what benefits are obtained by promoting reconciliation.

The importance of reconciliation

The full day in Spain lasts, in general, for eight hours. But reality shows us that workers spend much more time away from home to attend to their work obligations.

The average travel time from home to work and vice versa is about 45 minutes each way, so each employee spends almost two hours a day going back and forth. To this we must add the rest time between one part of the day and the other, which is usually one or two hours. If we add up all this time, it gives us a total of invested more than 12 hours a day to be able to work, even if only 8 of them are actual work.

After their day, the person still has to do things at home, take care of their children if they have them, or take care of a relative, go shopping and, if they are lucky, they can invest a little time in themselves and clear their mind doing a little sport, reading, or watching a movie. 

In order to do everything we want or need to do, what we end up doing is sacrificing hours of sleep, and this has consequences. According to the latest studies, we rest little and badly, and more than 25% of Spaniards sleep less than 7 hours a day. This ends up generating health problems on a physical and mental level, and causes us not to perform sufficiently at work.

Although it seems impossible to solve, companies have the solution in their hands: conciliation. because it is clear that we all need to have some time a day to dedicate to our family and ourselves, and it makes no sense that we are trying to gain that time at the cost of depriving ourselves of hours of sleep, when the logical thing to do would be to organize work time in a more rational way.

In return, companies would have workforces made up of much happier, more motivated and more productive employees. Therefore, it is time to face the change, with measures like the ones that we are going to expose.

1. Implement the continuous working day to improve conciliation

As soon as the good weather arrives, many companies rush to adopt the continuous shift, with which their employees start work earlier and, in return, can go home earlier because there is no break in the middle of working time.

If this system works in summer, why not also implement it in winter? If we allow a person to leave work at three or four in the afternoon, at five he will be home, and you will have the whole afternoon ahead to attend to your personal things.

The companies that apply this type of shift make the eight hours straight, with a small break of 15 minutes (it is mandatory in days of more than six hours) that counts as work time. Thus, a worker who clocked in at eight in the morning can go home at four in the afternoon.

Some companies even prefer to start work earlier and do it from seven to three. Although your employees have to get up earlier, many of them prefer it, because that way they can get to work before rush hour starts and waste less time.

2. Establish flexible hours

Time flexibility is a measure that gives you more autonomy for the employee when it comes to managing their work time. Instead of establishing a fixed work schedule, it is given greater freedom at entry and exit

Let's imagine a company that works from eight in the morning to six in the evening, with a one-hour break for lunch. What we can do is give a flexibility of one hour at the entrance and exit. In this way, the worker can, if needed, enter at nine in the morning and leave at seven. We could even set the flexibility in reverse as well, allowing employees to come in at seven and go home at five.

With just one hour of adjustment in the schedule, the company can make life much easier for its employees. Thus, there will be those who prefer to enter an hour earlier and leave at five to pick up their children at school, and those who prefer to enter at nine and leave at seven in the evening, because they take advantage of the first hour of the morning to go to the Gym.

3. Reduce rest time

Even if the company cannot make big adjustments to the schedule, it can make small changes that can improve the quality of life of its employees.

Many organizations that have part time establish a time of hour and a half or two hours between the morning and afternoon shift. Currently, practically no employee goes home to eat, almost everyone eats at the company or at a nearby restaurant, and it doesn't take that long to do so.

The time spent in the workplace would be significantly shortened if we regulated working time more rationally. To eat in the office, 40 or 45 minutes are more than enough. Therefore, the rest should not extend beyond this time. A) Yes, employees would return to their jobs much sooner and could go home sooner.

A practical example. Company where you start at eight in the morning, work until two and then have a break from two to four, taking up work again from four to six in the afternoon. Suppose we limit the time between one part of the day and another to 45 minutes.

Employees will be back at work at a quarter to three in the afternoon, which means they can leave at a quarter to five. They will be gaining an hour and a quarter of time for themselves, in exchange for something that costs the company absolutely nothing and will not affect their productivity.

4. Establish a teleworking system to improve work-life balance

If we save employees from traveling to the office, earn an average of two hours a day. Therefore, it is not surprising that remote work has been so well received by workers.

Working from home gives much more flexibility and allows the worker feel a little more master of your time, and that is something that has a very positive impact on their motivation. In addition, it contributes to reduce stress and improve economic situation of the person who works in this way, since they no longer have to invest money in transportation.

It is true that in some cases there are profiles of people who do not respond entirely well when they have to work continuously alone and end up feel “disconnected” from the company, which reduces their motivation. To avoid this, what many companies are doing is adopting a hybrid model.

A way of working that combines days at the office with days at home. Companies that seek to give their workers even more flexibility, let them decide where they will work from at all times.

5. Do not encourage overtime

There are times when it is absolutely necessary to put in overtime at work, but in most cases employees they end up staying longer in their position simply out of habit. Because it's what the boss does and everyone follows him. In fact, those who faithfully stick to their schedule may come under harsh criticism.

This is one culture that plays against conciliation and that only causes harm to people. Companies must work with their staff so that everyone understands that going home on time is not a bad thing and that, in fact, is the right thing to do.

For this to be possible, two assumptions must be made. The first is that the division of tasks must be adequate, so that workers are not overloaded and have to stay longer to get everything done. The second, leaders must lead by example and go home when the time comes, inviting your team members to do so too.

6. Compress the work week

The famous four day work week It is already being tested, and it is proving to be a success. So in the future, many companies could advocate adjusting work hours so that their employees have three days off per week.

7. Paid leave to care for family members

Beyond what is provided for in both the regulations and the collective agreements, some companies are granting paid leave to their employees so that they can accompany a family member to the doctor, stay home with your child if they are sick, etc.

Reconciliation measures cost little and contribute a lot. In an environment where there is a real struggle to attract and retain talent, implementing measures of this type can make a company much more attractive to work for.
