Employee well-being: strategies to mitigate work stress through technology

At the beginning of 2023, we analyzed the Human Resources trends for that year, and we pointed out among them the concern and care for the mental health of employees. At the beginning of this year and analyzing the trends, two factors that we had already heard about before stood out again: the mental well-being of workers and the use of technology at different levels. And, although they seem like two different issues, the truth is that they are closely related.

We often talk about technology as a tool that is changing the way we work. Capable of improving the productivity and profitability of companies, while freeing workers from tedious tasks and allowing them to make more use of their talent in tasks that are more valuable and promote their development on a professional and personal level. But we overlook an additional benefit of technology: its ability to become a source of well-being for those who work.

For this reason, we found it interesting to address in depth the different ways in which technology can help us mitigate work stress today.

Training in digital skills as a first step

We will not ignore the fact that the rapid technological advancement that we have experienced in recent years has become a source of anxiety for many people. They notice that they are falling behind in digital skills and feel “threatened” because they believe that a machine or software is going to end up doing their job.

Therefore, the starting point is to work with this source of stress. Get employees to see technology as an ally and not an enemy, and achieving it requires involvement from both the company and its staff.

The HR department now has to take on the important challenge of analyze the digital skills of employees and detect what the gaps are more common. In order to be able to offer workers training that keeps them up to date in the use of technology and allows them to feel more secure.

As people advance in their digital skills, they feel more confident when they have to use technology. They overcome that fear that we talked about before and, consequently, stress levels are reduced.

If we tell a person who has good digital skills that they can use technology to improve their mental well-being, they will surely welcome this idea and show interest in seeing how they can use this to their advantage.

Technology as a source of labor flexibility

We are used to analyzing what companies demand from their employees in terms of hard and soft skills, but we must keep in mind that workers also have demands towards their employers. In an environment where attracting and retaining talent is increasingly difficult, meeting these demands is becoming essential.

Beyond good salary and working conditions, the most common demand of workers is to be able to have a certain margin of flexibility. Because this is what allows them reconcile your personal life with your professional life. And it is more than proven that People's well-being increases when they have time to attend to their family responsibilities.

Labor flexibility gives rise to:

  • Good levels of conciliation that promote equality between women and men in caring for the family and attending to domestic tasks.
  • Happier and more loyal employees.
  • Higher productivity rates that translate into more benefits for the company.

It is clear that flexibility has many advantages, and it turns out that technology is a very useful tool when it comes to improving it. The clearest example is teleworking.

If a company has technology that allows your staff members to work from anywhere, will be more willing to open up to teleworking or, at least, to a hybrid work modality.

Freed from the obligation to go to the office every day, employees begin to feel better and less stressed. Because They have more time for themselves and their family, by saving trips to and from the workplace.

Time management tools: essential today

The ability to manage time is a soft skill whose value is increasing. Because it influences people's productivity, as well as their mental well-being.

If someone is able to organize their day well, they will deliver their assignments on time almost 100% of the time. This will avoid episodes of stress associated with delivery deadlines that cannot be met.

Like other soft skills, this is acquired through experience, and is improved little by little. Luckily, technology can help us advance more quickly in the field.

There are hundreds of different applications aimed at managing work time:

  • Those that allow you to do to-do lists and establish an order of priorities among them.
  • Those that apply a timer to achieve full dedication time spans to a task.
  • Those who send reminders about pending tasks.
  • Which block all types of notifications for a certain time so that nothing breaks the worker's concentration.

The combination of them helps employees be clear about what they have to do, set deadlines and manage their workload more effectively. As a result, the work comes out little by little, without that overwhelming feeling of stress arising, which only makes the person feel emotionally bad, increases their fatigue levels, and prevents them from working at a good pace.

Online communication and collaboration applications

Nowadays, it is common for those who make up a work team not to carry out their work from the same physical space. This helps improve diversity in teams, but can become a source of stress.

If the communication between colleagues is poor or difficult, some people may not be able to advance in their work at the pace they would like. That's when technology comes into play.

During the pandemic we all learned to use online communication and collaboration tools such as Slack, Microsoft Teams or Zoom. These types of applications are characterized because they are easy to use, and allow you to maintain direct contact with colleagues.

It is possible to perform video calling, texting, file sharings, etc. In this way, communication becomes much faster and more fluid, making teamwork easier.

In fact, the use of this type of application is recommended even in those cases in which all the components of a work team share the same physical location, because they can greatly streamline communications.

In the case of people who are teleworking, these types of applications have an added advantage. In addition to being used for work, they can also be used for make meetings more informal and enhance personal contact between colleagues. This reinforces the feeling of belonging to the company, and alleviates the feeling of loneliness and stress that can be associated with working alone for a long time.

Wellness platforms

Companies provide their employees with a large amount of information and tools necessary for their work. Now, if we want taking care of the mental health of the staff to stop being a mere aspiration and become a reality, we also Employees should be given tools and information to help them take care of themselves on a physical and mental level.

Luckily, many companies are increasingly aware of this issue and are taking steps forward. A simple way to do this is by allowing workers access to wellness platforms.

Online spaces where it is possible to find exercise programs, nutritional counseling, tips for managing work time, relaxation techniques and guidelines for sleeping better, among other things.

The goal is for employees adopt a healthier lifestyle and learn how to prevent and treat stress in those cases in which this becomes evident.

Going a little further, you can facilitate access to mindfulness and guided meditation platforms. These usually have a cost, and you have to pay a monthly subscription. Fee that the company can pay so that all its employees have access to practices that have been proven to be very effective in treating stress and improving well-being.

When a company invests in training in digital skills and technological tools to make its employees feel better, it is also investing in improving their productivity. Because a happy, healthy and satisfied workforce is a workforce that works harder and better.
